RAILWAY SIGNS AND THE BRUNEL GWR BENCH

Inspired by the Adlestrop centenary feature at Chelsea flower show in 2014 We decided to remake the Victorian GWR platform bench. Originals are available very occasionally and other makers have remade the more recent Art Deco design.

I like to think that Brunel himself designed this casting and the proportion and angle of the timbers to make the seat. More likely he was looking over the shoulder of one of his draftsmen working at a drawing board.
Later Brunel would be handling and checking the beautifully made wooden pattern that would be set in a sand mould to cast the molten iron.

The long GWR platform bench has 3 support frames and the backrest can be carved with a message, a name, a date or one of the stations on your Heritage railway line. So, we have not only made an accurate copy of Brunel`s pattern but also designed an oak-leaf as an alternative to the GWR motif, looking splendid in a pale grey green and cream livery.
